Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

  • Reflexology is a complementary therapy that works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the current symptoms.
  • You do not have to be ill to benefit from a treatment.
  • Many people have Reflexology because it is a great way to relax and to relieve stress, anxiety and tension.
  • Reflexology is a holistic therapy treating the body as a whole.

If you have a particular condition then you will find Reflexology to be a nurturing, relaxing treatment that will help your body begin to balance and heal itself. Regular Reflexology treatments will help you keep that balance and develop a lasting sense of well being.

Reflexology works along holistic principles taking in account body, mind and spirit and facilitates a state of homeostasis or balance. It is based upon the theory that every organ, structure and part of the body is reflected in a related part of the foot.

  • A reflexologist uses a very specific method using thumb and fingers to apply controlled pressure to the reflexes of the feet.
  • By applying this pressure to the reflex areas, muscle tensions are relaxed, the nerve supply freed from constriction, allowing the body to fall into a deep state of relaxation.
  • Gently applying pressure to specific reflexes of the feet can also clear blocked energy channels, encourage the removal of waste products and toxins, stimulate circulation creating the right condition for a return to health.
  • As energy is able to flow more freely and fully around the body, the functioning of the body’s systems is optimised and facilitates a state of balance or homeostasis, encouraging the body to heal itself.

How can reflexology help me?

Reflexology is a safe natural therapy and may aid in the relief of a wide range of acute or chronic conditions. It brings about the relaxation response providing the right environment for change to take place within the body.

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. Reflexology has been shown to be effective for many conditions including:

  • Stress related conditions
  • Sinus congestion
  • Back pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Digestive disorders
  • ME (chronic fatigue syndrome)
  • Hypertension
  • Migraine
  • Vertigo
  • Headaches

Who can benefit from reflexology?

  • Since reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms of a disease, most people benefit from treatment.
  • An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing and of balancing and harmonising the body.
  • Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • It can help to relieve stress and tension, improve the blood supply and stimulate the body's natural healing ability and thus enhance the quality of life.

After having completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being. While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognize reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.

With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.

What happens when I go for treatment?

On the first visit, the reflexology practitioner will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person.

A professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet, and by working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body. A treatment session usually lasts for about one hour. A course of treatment may be recommended depending on your body’s needs.

How will I feel after a reflexology treatment?

After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; sometimes people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process. This is vital information to feed back to the reflexologist as it shows how your body is responding to treatment. This will help the reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.

What Next?

An initial consultation which includes a discussion on your relevant medical history and what you hope Reflexology to achieve lasts approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Individual treatments vary considerably but sometimes a course of 5 or 6 sessions is advisable in order to derive maximum benefits. Each treatment lasts between 45 minutes to an hour. After completing a course of reflexology for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments to maintain health and well being.
